Sweating is actually supposed to help the body keep its temperature in check and protect us from overheating. In the case of hyperhidrosis, however, sweat production is uncontrolled and excessive. Excessive sweating is caused by overactive sweat glands. The glands react too strongly to nervous signals and produce underarm sweat even when the body is not warmed up, e.g. through sport. The botulinum toxin acts on the nerve endings that are responsible for transmitting the signals for sweat production. The injection therefore blocks the transmission of signals to the glands and minimizes sweating.
