Does Botox help against migraines?

It is known to many as a miracle cure for wrinkles, but there is so much more to Botox: during a migraine treatment, the botulinum toxin is injected into specific areas of your head and neck muscles using very fine syringes. The resulting relaxation of these muscle areas can prevent your migraine attacks. Treatment with botulinum toxin is suitable for you if you regularly suffer from severe migraine symptoms and have not responded sufficiently to other medication and treatment methods for migraines.

This is how your treatment works

Your desired result in 4 steps:

Together with our experts, you will first discuss your affected areas of pain. Your doctor will then determine your optimal injection sites and adjust the dosage of botulinum to your individual needs.

Botox is then injected into your pain points, e.g. forehead, temples or neck. The migraine treatment is barely noticeable for you and only takes around 10-20 minutes.

After about 2-3 days, you will see the first effects: The muscle relaxation reduces the intensity of the pain and can prevent your migraine attacks in the long term.

If necessary, we offer you a free follow-up appointment two weeks after the injection to perfect your results. During this follow-up treatment, our doctors inject Botox specifically into the areas that continue to cause you discomfort.

Recommendations after migraine treatment with Botox

After treatment with Botox injections, your forehead wrinkles appear significantly reduced. The forehead appears smoother and more radiant, while your natural facial expressions remain intact. Our patients report a fresher and more youthful appearance. Take a look at our before and after pictures and see the impressive results for yourself.

Sport and physical activities

Take a short break from sport and avoid intensive sessions for the first 72 hours. This is the only way for the Botox against migraines to take effect undisturbed! Also avoid extreme heat during this period! You should avoid sunbathing, saunas and the like for these days.

Alcohol and nicotine

Alcohol and nicotine can increase swelling and slow down your healing process. You should therefore reduce your consumption a few days before and especially after the injection. It would even be best if you simply abstained from them altogether.

Massages

Please do not touch the treated areas yourself or allow others to do so after your treatment. Simply reschedule your massage appointments for another day! Otherwise you run the risk of the botulinum slipping.

Regular refresher

We recommend refreshing your migraine injections every 3 months to prevent migraine attacks in the long term.

Downtime after treatment

Minimally invasive treatment with Botox has one clear advantage: there is no downtime. You can continue your everyday life as normal immediately after the injection and do not have to take any extra vacation time.

Botox for migraines: side effects and expectations

As with any other treatment, side effects can also occur with Botox for migraines. However, these are generally temporary and usually very mild. The first effect of the migraine treatment usually occurs within 48-72 hours. After around three months, however, the positive effect of Botox for migraines can gradually wear off, which means that pain and attacks can occur more frequently again. It is therefore recommended to repeat the treatment every 3 months to achieve the best possible results.

Redness and swelling

The most common side effect is probably redness around the injection site, which becomes noticeable shortly after the injection. Don’t worry, this usually subsides after just a few hours.

Tension headaches

In the rarest of cases, mild tension headaches may occur, but overall this therapy for migraines is considered to be very well tolerated and is accepted by most patients without any problems.
